The Witness of Thomas

These are secret sayings that the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas recorded.

1. And he said, "Whoever understands these sayings will not taste death." [Logion 1]

2. Jesus said,

If your leaders tell you, look! the Kingdom in the sky!
— then the birds of the sky will precede you.
If they say, look! it is in the sea!
— then the fish will precede you.

The Kingdom is both
 within you / without you.

3. Jesus saw some babes nursing, and to his disciples
He said, "These babes are like those who enter the Kingdom."
They asked, "Then shall we enter the Kingdom as babes?"
Jesus said,

When the two become one,
inner mirroring outer,
outer mirroring inner,
upper and lower each other,
uniting male and female
so that both disappear:

eye to eye,
hand to hand,
foot to foot,
mirror to mirror —
Thus shall ye enter.

4. Simon Peter said to them, "Make Mary leave us, for females do not deserve life."
Jesus said,

Look, I will guide her to make herself male,
 so that she may become a man in spirit.
For every woman who makes herself male
 shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

5. Jesus said,

If you bring forth what is within you,
 what is within you will save you.
If you do not bring it forth,
 what you hold back will destroy you.

6. His disciples said, "Show us the place where you are, for we must seek it."
Jesus said,

Everyone with both ears should listen!
There is light within a person of the Light,
 and it fills the whole world.
Where it does not shine
 remains in shadow.

7. Jesus said,

I am the light that fills all things.
I am all: from me all came forth,
 unto me all are gathered.

Split a piece of wood
— I am there.
Lift up the stone
— there am I.

8. Jesus said,

What I give no eye has seen,
 nor ear has ever heard,
where no hand was there to touch,
 nor heart to stir.

9. Jesus said,

Whoever is near me is near the fire,
and whoever is far from me
is far from the Kingdom.

10. Then his disciples said to him, "When will the kingdom come?"
Jesus said,

It comes unobserved,
neither here nor there.

Already the Kingdom
spreads o’er the earth,
yet nobody sees.

11. Jesus said,

The Kingdom is like meal
spilling from a woman’s sack
along the road, unseen.
